LESSON #1 Cleansing the Body-Temple

Website: www.terrimcfaddin.org
Presented by: Terri McFaddin Solomon

Definitions: Helpmate – Handmaiden – Harlot
Helpmate: A married woman who is committed to the well being of her husband.
Handmaiden: An unmarried or married woman who is committed to serving the Lord.
Harlot: An unmarried or married woman who sells her soul or body for personal gain.

Temple:
“Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If any one corrupts the temple of God, that person God will destroy, for the temple of God is holy, and such are you.”
I Corinthians 3:16

Scripture Focus:

Helpmate: Proverbs 31:17 (Amplified) She girds herself with strength (spiritual, mental and physical fitness for her God given task) and makes her arms strong and firm.

Handmaiden: Proverbs 3:7-8 Do not be wise in your own eyes. Fear the Lord and stay away from evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.

Harlot: Psalm 38:3 There is no soundness in my flesh because of Your anger, nor any health in my bones because of my sin.

OPENING STATEMENT:

The Helpmates: One of the big challenges that a marriage can face is the issue of how the wife takes care of her body. Unfortunately, most husbands are conditioned by television images of bouncy girls with breast implants. They want a wife who looks like Tara Banks and prepare meals like Martha Stewart. In reality, pregnancies, stress, menopause and other factors like genetics, can cause a woman to go through many physical transformations. The virtuous woman in Proverbs in 31:17 was not interested in becoming the next top model. Her focus was to keep her body in good condition for the purpose of maintaining a very busy schedule, looking good for her husband and setting a good example for her children. The virtuous woman was a hard worker and she recognized that her brain and her body were her most important tools. Try one day a week of cleansing your body by drinking fresh juices in the morning and eating only raw or steamed vegetables in the evening. Proper diet and exercise should be your way of saying thank you to the Lord that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. (Psalm 139:14)

Handmaidens: How would you like it if you gave someone a brand new house to live in (free of charge) and they refused to take care of it? I’m sure you would be upset with that person. The Spirit of God dwells within us. We are His house, but not just any house. The Lord calls us His Holy Temple. Therefore, our bodies should be treated with reverence and respect. We should be proud of who we are because we were created in His image (Genesis 1:27). A handmaiden is a woman who serves the Lord and dwells in His presence. I want to challenge you to make a list of all the things you are doing that are harmful to your body. Be sure to include things like junk food and fad diets. Now I want you to imagine sharing all of these practices with the Lord. After all, He is your roommate. Would you sit in the presence of Jesus and light a cigarette and blow smoke in his face? I often hear women who love the Lord say, “I want to be used in ministry, but the Lord seems to overlook me.” Perhaps if you take the time to cleanse your body/temple, and stay away from evil practices (Proverbs 3:7), the Lord might feel more at home and begin to redesign your life.

Harlots: Have you ever gone to a class reunion and ran into some of your old classmates? Or taken a trip to your hometown and looked up your old girlfriends? There’s nothing sadder than seeing an ex-party girl who did a little bit of everything and now she’s paying the price. She looks older than her age and seems to lack strength and energy. Sin will take away your health and leave you with diseases that you can hardly pronounce, let alone get rid of. The harlot who is kicking up her heels today – living large with men at her beck and call – will pay a high price for her rebellious lifestyle. If you are out there being a party girl, I urge you to change your lifestyle while there’s still time. I have seen the Lord renovate a run down, abused body and turn it into a beautiful dwelling place. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation; the old has gone and the new has come.
2 Corinthians 5:17

YOUR STORY:

Are you someone who had to make radical changes in your lifestyle in order to restore your health? If so, what forced you to make the change? Where did you find the strength, discipline and determination? What actions did you take and what prayers did you pray?

OBSERVATIONS AND PERSONALIZATION:

Helpmate: Read 31:13-24. The woman in this passage was one busy lady. How do you think she found the time to take care of her family, run a business and then “strengthen her body?” Search the bible and find out where our strength comes from.

If finding time to take care of yourself was a matter of life and death, what changes would you make in your schedule that would help to keep you alive?

Handmaiden: Read Revelations 3:20. If Jesus Christ came back to earth in human form and chose to be your houseguest for seven days, what would you prepare for him to eat? What would you do to help him relax and feel welcomed in your home?

Harlot: Read Deuteronomy 7:11-15. All disease does not come from a sinful lifestyle. But if we desire good health, it is necessary to know what the Lord requires. What are some of the things that you can change in your lifestyle that would be pleasing to the Lord?

Discovering Deeper Levels of Prayer – I’m having trouble praying.

I am reading this lesson at work on Friday. I am not good at all with praying. I try but it seems like I let obstacles get in my way. I know deep down inside of me that prayer is what I need. As I write this to you I am caught up in violence. I have a troubled 13 year old and a lot of family issues. I also have a son that is 23. I have let violence into my life with my daughter’s father. Just yesterday evening I was fighting with her father up and down the street. I was so embarrassed but mostly for my 13 year old daughter. If I would have prayed I don’t think this would have happened in my life. I am so full of fear. I know God is in charge but I can’t see him. Sometimes I do not feel him. I am failing as a mother. My daughter is failing in school. I want to trust God that I will be delivered from all of this mess. I really thought I was delivered a long time ago, but I guess I did not really trust in the Lord.

Answer

Dear Sister:
Real prayer begins to happen only when you get closer to the Lord. In order to know Him – feel Him – see Him with your spirit, you need to spend more time building your spiritual life. Begin to read the Bible on a daily basis. If you and your daughter are not in a good church, then you need to find one and start attending on a regular basis. You said that you thought you were delivered a long time ago. This tells me that perhaps there was a time when you were a lot closer to the Lord. Jesus is still knocking at the door of your heart. If you let Him come in, his peace will enter your life and the struggles that you are going through with your daughter and her father will eventually come to an end. Read Philippians 4:6-7.
Blessings, Terri

Sandra – Los Angeles, CA

What events have taken place in your life that caused you to pray more deeply than ever before? It was my daughter's senior year in high school when the Lord took me into the most intense time of prayer. Every morning from 3-5 am, He would take me deep into intercessory prayer. This went on for two weeks. I continued to pray night and day. I tried to gain insight into what was happening during that early morning watch. Finally, my daughter called me at work to ask advice about a "friend" that was pregnant. The Holy Spirit gave quick direction and said, "Ask her if it is her?" She fell apart at the question, but God had prepared me during those early morning prayers to be kind and supportive at this critical time in her life. Things worked out and now I have a wonderful, God fearing grandson named Jordan who loves God with all of his heart! My daughter eventually married a wonderful man who accepts Jordan as his own son.

Lesson #4: Have you ever tried to worship the Lord and a person at the same time?

Yes, my ex-husband was my IDOL.

I got married at the age of 22 yrs old. I worshiped my husband because of his acceptance and validation. I think it was because of the rejection that I went through in my childhood that I needed to feel like I was valuable to someone. God was calling me closer to him through my time in prayer and reading the Word. But all I wanted to do was spend time with my husband and try my best to get his attention. This took place when we were dating and became even more intense when we got married. I was so afraid of being rejected and being abandoned I got lost in my marriage. My husband wasn't very mature and didn’t know how to nurture my insecurities. He finally left me and I was devastated. But after he was gone I came into my own identity in Christ and came to know God’s love and acceptance. Now after being divorced for almost 5 years, I'm on the path of putting God first. It's still a challenge sometimes, but I'm getting stronger and stronger every day.

How Women's Discipleship Group Got Started

The Women's Discipleship Group was organized in 1999 by Terri McFaddin and Janet Bailey. The purpose of the discipleship group was to assist women in becoming rooted and grounded in their Christian faith. It was designed to also help women reach the level of spiritual maturity that would enable them to use their gifts and talents in various arenas of service and ministry.

We move toward these goals by implementing the following principles:

1. Building spiritual strength by a systematic study of the Word of God, including prayer; memorizing scriptures and weekly meetings.

2. Building strong relationships within the discipleship groups. This includes encouraging one another and being sensitive and supportive of one another's needs.

3. Training women to become servants and ministry leaders in their churches, mission fields, communities, schools, businesses or wherever God has called them to serve.

What We Believe

The women of WDG are a mixture of many different Christian denominations. But we all believe that we have eternal life through our personal confession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that the entire Word of God is true and we govern our actions by the counsel of the Holy Bible. We believe that we are called by God to be examples of godliness by loving one another and ministering to those who are in need of our help.
